Several riders. The summer break seemed to drag on, and then all of a sudden it was Labor Day weekend. Burnt Timber, hosted by the Butcher family since 2003, was rescheduled from a wet spring. The “Brawl in the Breaks” is a favorite among the Montana XC members. And this year was another epic weekend of riding. The highlights would have to include some of the hilarity of the bra relay race. Yes, a bra. Riders must wear the lady’s undergarment during their lap and pass the garment to the next rider. The weather was beautiful and the evening sky gave hint of rain. And, it rained, but thankfully it wasn’t ‘too much’. The racing on Sunday was beautiful. The temperatures stayed cool and the sky cloudy, the ground was tacky and it was a great day to be on the line.

Tom Stark surprised the field with an incredible performance in the A Senior class. He lead his class the entire race, and had the third fastest first lap overall, finishing with an impressive fourth place overall. Stark was bested by Open A racers Spencer Debuf (1st), CJ Morris (2nd), and Evan Ask (3rd). The race for the series points is wide open between those three Open A racers. Less than 10 points separates the three. Debuf is currently holding the lead with Ask five points behind, and Morris just three more from Ask.

The women had an impressive line representing in both the Women’s C and Women’s B. On Saturday, the Women’s C was 8 deep, with Fancy Reynolds taking a solid first. Sunday’s B lineup was one better with nine women starting the race. Bailey Lerwill, along with Bobbi Massic and Megan Anderson, raced their first B class race after being moved up from the Women’s C along with Sarah Hagel. The challenge of the course was not lost on these talented women, with Bailey Lerwill still delivering an undefeated season.

The Montana XC season closes on October 8/9 with the AMA Sanctioned XC State Championship. The dates for 2017 are being put together, with at least 3 new races in the series. The Montana XC is looking for new venues to host AMA sanctioned cross country races on.
