On September 23rd 2017 a small group of riders gathered near the Rat Lake Trailhead. The reason for the gathering was the Inaugural Ride of a new OHV club, Five Rivers Trail Riders. Twenty two people in all brought out motorcycles, Jeeps, side by sides, and ATVs in spite of the morning’s snow and cold temps. Two rides were planned, one for the over 50” crowd and one for those under 50”s. The over 50” crowd took an old road up into more than 6”s of snow climbing to just behind the Storm Castle rock bluff.
The 50” and less crowd clawed their way into the clouds, reaching their highest point at Garnet Lookout. They then looped through a slew of large mud puddles, some nearing seat height to pass by the Pioneer Lakes and back onto the main road. There may or may not have been swimming lessons given in those mud puddles. When the group reached the main road the majority of the motorcycles split off to head back to camp. The ATVs and smaller side by sides continued on for several more miles.
Everyone met back at the end of the day to warm up with some hot drinks, hamburgers, and hot dogs. There wasn’t any shortage of friendly conversation or food and drink. All in all it was a great day to be out riding and enjoying local trails, great food, and most importantly great people.
